What is a Mithqal of Gold?
The “Mithqal” is an ancient unit of mass still used in Iran and some Arab countries. There are several types, including the Sharia Mithqal (3.456 g), Sarrafi Mithqal (4.608 g), and the Common Mithqal (4.6875 g).
In the Iranian gold market, a “Mithqal of gold” or “Melted Mithqal” typically refers to 4.6083 grams of 18-karat gold. 18K gold (or 750 gold) consists of 75% pure gold and 25% other metals (usually copper or rhodium), and is used primarily in raw or broken form, not in finished jewelry.
A mithqal is used for trading raw or scrap gold, much like the gram. When you sell gold, its weight is calculated in grams or mithqals and multiplied by the current market rate. However, when you buy finished jewelry, additional charges apply, such as fabrication cost, seller’s profit, and VAT.
The term “Mozzeneh” is also used to refer to the price of one mithqal of 17-karat gold, and serves as a standard reference in price announcements.
